    past simple

    Hello!

Is the use of the Past simple correct in this sentence? Would it be better to use the present perfect?

"Edimburg has a really special atmosphere. You can feel that many thing happened there."

    Thank you
    W

The past simple is possible, but the present perfect is more likely.

First, I think you mean Edinburgh and second, it should be "things". With regard to your question, in many cases the simple past and present perfect can be used interchangeably. Your example is one of those cases.
