    Smile hear someone shouting

Please check out the following sentences.
    Which is acceptable, #1 or #2 ?
Mike previously put a mini wireless speaker in the robot dog. Then he hid himself behind the sofa and waited for the chance to tease Jilly.
    (1) While Jilly was trying to make the robot dog say something again, the robot dog shouted "You are stupid!".
    (2) While Jilly was trying to make the robot dog say something again, she was shocked to hear the robot dog shout "You are stupid!".
