    This looks like homework.

Tell us what you think first.

Re: Word usage: rise, arise, raise..

    Hi Rover,

It is not homework. It is a question asked in a MBA entrance exam which I have appeared last week. Why I am asking this question is I am missing the cut off marks in the Verbal Ability section of the exam to get a interview call from the college. If the answer I have chosen is correct, I will clear the cut off marks.

Actually, the question asked in the exam is: "which of the following words (rise, raise, arise, arose )can fill the blanks more number of times" .

I think the answers would be:

    i) Opportunities will __rise or raise____, and you must grab them
ii) A hot wind __arise_____ from the desert.
iii) I ___arise____ at dawn on most days.
iv) A mood of optimism __arose_____ among the people.

    Answer choices:
    1. one of the word can be used to fill 3 blanks
    2. one of the word can be used to fill 2 blanks
    3. two of the words can be used to fill 2 blanks
    4. each word can fill only one blank.

Though the question seems easy, I felt it little tricky. I have chosen the 2nd option.

    Thank you for your time.

Re: Word usage: rise, arise, raise..

The option you chose is correct, but for the wrong reason.

Arose is correct for ii) and iv).
