    Hi teacher:

Would you please tell me what the clause 'which runs in them' means?

Her Sunday dress was win-colored silk with a dingy lace collar. Once she had had on stockings, which runs in them.

    Thank you.

    Re: meaning

Stockings with runs in them are stockings (hose) which have been snagged and have become unwoven along a line(s). This person is not well-dressed; her clothes are in bad shape.
