Is it this sentence phrased well?

The reality of the year 2000 was not the same as today's

Or should I write: "as today's reality?"

I'm not an English teacher.

I'd use "as that of today" to be consistent with the previous construction, "of the year 2000."

So would I, but the OP's version is acceptable, IMO.
