I came across another hard sentence. This one comes from China's national entrance examination for graduate school (year 2010's). The following sentence comes from the translation part. Test takers are supposed to translate it into Chinese.
This sentence may sound very simple to you native speakers. But not to me. Because we never speak like this in Chinese. "Time was when...", What does it mean exactly? Is it another way of saying "There was a time when...."???Time was when biologists somewhat overworked the evidence that these creatures preserve the health of game by killing the physically weak, or that they prey only on "worthless" species.
If not, please paraphase.
I really wanna know. I read a lot more English materials than my peers. But I've never read expressions like this.
Hearty thanks in advance.
