    come off second-best

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

…we were both in love with the same girl and we knew that one of us must come off second-best.

second best = next to the best

come off second-best = suffer defeat, suffer a setback

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V
