    Neither is correct.

    'Sorry we did not reply promptly, but we were closed yesterday.'

    I think this is what you mean. He doesn't care why you were closed; the apology and reply will do nicely.

    Yes, I agree with Rover_KE.

    You could also slightly rephrase the 1st part to say:
    "Apologies for the delay in replying - the office was closed yesterday":
