    recapture

    Dear teachers,

Would you help to me to make the proper choice of the meaning of the word in bold in the following sentence?

Arguably the main challenge for the G20 leaders at this summit is to recapture the unity achieved out of necessity during the major recession of 2008.

recapture = restore, rehabilitate, reinstate, regain, recoup, re-establish, retrieve

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    Re: recapture

Hi, I'm not a teacher, but I thought "regain" would be a better alternative to capture something that was previously owned.

I think "recapture" tells us that unity is difficult to achieve and that the countries will have to work to achieve it.

I agree that recapture is the best choice. While restore and regain are possible, rehabilitate and reinstate do not work in this context.
