    dampen

    Dear teachers,

Would you help to me to make the proper choice of the word in bold in the following sentence?

Suu Kyi's freedom is seen by international observers as an effort by the regime to dampen condemnation of the elections.

dampen = smother or suppress or

dampen = make vague, obscure or make (an image) less visible or

dampen = lessen in force or effect

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

I feel that your third try is very close indeed.
