    will+already

    Hi,
Can anyone explain the meaning of this sentence to me?
Doubtless you will have heard the news already.
I wonder how come the words will and already can collocate in one sentence
    Thanks!

    Re: will+already

It's using will have + past participle to show something the speaker assumes has happened before the time of speaking.

    Re: will+already

Thanks for your reply but Im still puzzled as I thought the will refers to future and therefore I would rather say:
Doubtless you have heard the news already.
    Or is there a difference?
    Thanks!

    Re: will+already

Will doesn't always refer to the future- we use it in assumptions, though I think thisis more common in BrE than AmE. If you would rather say it your way, it's absolutely fine.

    Re: will+already

Background: Luke's plane took off three hours ago. The flight to London takes two hours..

Luke will have landed an hour ago.
Luke will be in London now.
Luke will be driving home from the airport now.
Luke will be arriving home within the next thirty minutes.
