    you are to save from being plucked of her borrowed plumes / discover/ brand

    Dear teachers,

    Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

    It’s E. whose life is once more in your hands, it’s E. whom you are to save from being plucked of her borrowed plumes, discovered, branded, and trodden down, first by him, perhaps who has raised her to this dizzy pinnacle. (W. Scott, “The Heart of Mid-Lothian”)

    you are to save from being plucked of her borrowed plumes = you are to brook no she was found to be a rook with plucked peacock plumes

    discover = expose, denounce

    brand = stigmatize

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    I haven't read the book, but it sounds as if she is going to be exposed as some sort of fake (probably pretending to have a social position that is false) and cast out.
