    flat-tire

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

…some thought he was a man of destiny, and others were equally sure that he was a “four-flusher”, a “flat tire”. (U. Sinclair, “Between Two Worlds”)

flat tire = a poor person, a plain person

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

    Re: flat-tire

I'd go for, "No use any more, past his best".

    Re: flat-tire

Thank you again for your appropriate amendment.

    I see what you mean.

flat-tire = junk; quite useless person
