    question about tense agreement

I told you that I would teach you the answer when the exam is over. versus I told you that I would teach you the answer when the exam was over.

    Which is right?

    Re: question about tense agreement

Interesting. I would have said "was."

"I will teach you that when the exam is over." -- direct speech.

I told you that I would... when it was over. -- back shifting reported speech.

If the exam remains in the future, I'd have no problem using "is" but I wouldn't call the "was" wrong.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
