Question Barring an error on my part

    HI
    Is author has mistaken?
    Please help understanding this text.

Barring an error on my part, John Paul II Will thus have been the first. Pope to sanction in that way - timidly, it is true - the existence of the homicidal gas chambers.
    Thanks

The errors are, a capital "w" for "will", the full stop after "first" and the comma after "timidly".

It means "If I am not mistaken" or "If I haven't made a mistake".
