    half

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the word in bold in the following sentence?

Our servant, John Fry, told everybody that a mad dog had bitten me, and I think my mother half believed him.

half = partly, all but, well-nigh

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

It pretty much means that she believed the tale, but grudgingly. i.e. She believed it for now while thinking it seemed a bit far-fetched, but she'd accept it till she found out what really happened.
