    Question Mark Correction

May I wish you all the best in your new assignment as a President / CEO of the new operation?

Please tell me whether the question mark in the end is correct.

    Grraman,

I found an answer in Mr. Theodore M. Bernstein's Dos, Don'ts

& Maybes of English Usage (New York: Times Books, 1977), p. 185:

"May we have the pleasure of hearing from you soon."

Mr. Bernstein says we do not use a question mark when we do

    not expect an answer.

When you say, "May I wish you all the best," you do not expect the

new CEO to answer, "Yes, you may."

I think that it is just a nice, polite, and modest way to make a

    a statement:

I wish you all the best in your new assignment.

Asking for permission ("May I ....") just makes you sound a

little more humble and respectful. (And it is always a good

idea to be humble and respectful toward the CEO!!!)

    THANK YOU
