Dear teachers,

Would you be kind to help me to make a proper choice of the interpretation of the words in bold in the following sentences?

The general drew up his troops in order.

The soldiers were drawn up in battle lines.

draw up = form up

in order = in proper sequence or arrangement

He drew himself up to his full height.

draw up = elongate

The royal carriage was drawn up outside the palace, ready for the Queen's journey.

draw up = halt

Once you've accepted a bid, you and the contractor will draw up a written contract based on that bid.

draw up = compose; write out

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

The general drew up his troops in order. draw up = form up :tick:
in order = in proper sequence or arrangement :tick:

He drew himself up to his full height. draw up = elongate This is the right idea, though 'elongate' sounds very strange. 'Pull/stretch oneself up' is closer to the mark.

The royal carriage was drawn up outside the palace... draw up = halt :tick:

... you and the contractor will draw up a written contract ... draw up = compose; write out :tick:
