In the heart of the city

    1. A lot of people do lack social awareness when they constantly liter on the main streets in the heart of the city.
    2. A lot of people do lack common sense when they constantly liter on the main streets in downtown.

    - Are these sentences good to say?

    Thanks a lot,

A lot of people show a lack of social awareness (when they litter)(by littering) the streets.
They don't have to constantly do it or do it in the heart of the city to show a lack of social awareness. And they they presumably always lack social awareness, but they just show it when they litter.

    2. A lot of people do lack common sense when they constantly liter on the main streets in downtown.
I would make the same changes as in sentence 1. And I wouldn't mainly associate littering with a lack of common sense. I would associate littering with a lack of (civic pride and responsibility)(good citizenship)(courtesy)(respect).
    Thanks a lot,

Re: In the heart of the city

    Dear 2006!

    - What's the difference between "common sense" and "social awareness"? Common sense is very different from social awareness. The following examples show a lack of common sense.

leaving your car unlocked and the keys in the car
spending a good chunk of your paycheck on lottery tickets
    drinking and driving

In your version "A lot of people show a lack of social awareness (when they litter)(by littering) the streets."
, it should be ".........when they litter on the streets" or ".............by littering in the streets", right?
No, they litter the streets. (The streets are littered.)

"on" or "in" is used with some verbs and not with others. Also, using "on" or "in" can change the meaning.

Don't scratch the wall. (The wall is scratched.)
    Don't scratch on the wall.

    Don't spit the wall.
Don't spit on the wall. (The wall has been spit on.)

paint the wall = apply a coat of paint to the wall
paint on the wall = paint a picture of something on the wall
