    Serve to

"Of particular significance was the extensive paper I wrote on Roman criminal law, which also served to reinforce my research skills."

Is "served to" used correctly? "Which also served as an opportunity for me to reinforce my research skills" might be better. What do you think?

    Thanks!

I haven't heard this to be honest; English isn't my native language, but I've been living in Canada for many years. My answer to this question is NO.

    What do you think?
You can use "meant to" instead.

I think it's OK. The act of writing the paper, and the preparation that that involved, served to reinforce the research skills.

Meant to doesn't work in that sentence.
