    Reporting using a present tense

    Dear teachers,

When reporting someone's words in one of the present tenses, is it possible to use a past tense in the that-clause? For example,

Every time when the boy brings home something ugly, he says he found it in the street.

Perhaps 'has found' is a better alternative, but is the Past Simple here a mistake?

    Thank you in advance.

You can use whatever tense was used in the original words. In this case the boy says, "I found it in the street".
