    Question reported speech

    Dear Teachers,

    do the following sentences sound equally natural:

    Archimedes knew that gold and silver have different densities.

    Archimedes knew that gold and silver had different densities.

    Yes.

    People who follow blindly 'sequence of tenses' rules will insist that only #2 is correct.

    As gold and silver continue to have different densities, most of us consider that #1 is acceptable and natural.
