    put all to the sack

    Hi,

What does "put all to the sack" mean in this sentence?

The invaders put all to the sack.

P.S.: If the sentence sounds unnatural or old-fashioned to you, please let me know.

They plundered and destroyed everything. It's formal and old-fashioned.

    - though 'put everyone to the sword', though rather old-fashioned, isn't quite as archaic. Modern history books still use 'sack' as a verb.
