    The steps had a nonskid coating to provide better traction.
    The truck bed and a nonskid surface.


    It helps prevent things (or people!) from slipping.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    In BrE we say "non-slip".
