I need your help to clarify the following bold phrase :
"He served in the US armed as a Third Class Pharmacist Mate".
Either armed forces or the army, but given his job he was certainly in the navy. He was a third-class petty officer in the job category of pharmacist's mate. You can google US Navy enlisted ranks to understand more.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
