Which is proper in the following between until and to?

Due to the heavy rain, the party was delayed ( ) the next day.

I guess until is proper, but why not "to"?

You're right in your thinking that delay + until is the right one - that is an example of what is called collocation, that is the way that some words occur regularly whenever another word is used.
