My and mine are possessives.

My is a possessive adjective and we use it in front of the noun that it modifies.

Mine is a possessive pronoun and is used instead of a noun.

You could ask the students questions based on the model below:
  • This is my cup.
  • This is mine. This cup is mine.
  • Is this your cup?
  • Yes, this is my cup.
  • Is this cup yours?
  • Yes, this cup is mine.
  • Which cup is yours?
  • This cup is mine.
  • etc.

You're welcome. The possessive pronouns are useful because we can use them even if we don't know the name of thing that we want to talk about.

For example, with a cup, we could simply ask "It this yours?" and the answer would be "yes, it's mine" or "no, it isn't mine."
