    The sun was shining

    Hello everyone,

I am confused about the usage of the Past Simple tense in the following sentence from the book The Runaway by Martina Cole:

The sun was shining, the bells rang out in exultation and the bride was happy.

Why 'the bells rang out ...'? Should it not be the bells were ringing out?

    Thank you in advance.

It could be the bells were ringing out. The use of the simple form makes the ringing shorter, or suggests that the ringing began at the moment we are talking about.
