Is the punctuation in the sentence below correct? Is the comma after "performance" necessary?

"In general, open competition characterizes European sport, meaning that teams are judged by their performance, irrespective of other factors, such as their financial situation, average crowd attendance, or television revenues."

Thanks!

I'd write it like this:
"In general, open competition characterizes European sport. This means that teams are judged on their performance irrespective of other factors, such as their financial situation, average crowd attendance, or television revenues."

Is "by their performance" wrong?

Thanks!

Farhan bhai, you should start a new thread of your own rather than ask a new question on someone else's thread.
