    About Oral English

    Dear teachers.
Which one of these phrases below is used more often in oral English?
    1. Do I need to pay now?
    2. Need I pay now?
I wonder how these two differ from each other.
In what kinds of case do you use "need" as an auxiliary verb?
    Thank you.

    Re: About Oral English

Most Americans would say #1. The second sounds too formal.

    Re: About Oral English

'Need' as a modal verb is not generally used in affirmative statements.

If in doubt, use the full verb 'need' followed by a to-infinitive.

    World Peace,

I think that many people would prefer:

Do I have to pay now?
