    major city

    Hello!

I came across a question in a test that reads as follows:

What's the _____ city of Australia?

    A.major B. capital

I know that 'major city' is a collocation; besides, when 'major' is used with the definite article, it implies 'the largest or most important".
Is that a bad question or am I lacking some logic?

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: major city

The answer is B. You might refer to the major cities in a nation, but you would not say one was "the major city." You might ask what was the largest city or the most populous.

    Re: major city

    Thank you!
I know that the anwer is B, I'm just trying to explain to myself why the first option should be ruled out.
Does that mean that I can never say " the major city'?

    Re: major city

It's not natural to me. I would say the largest city or the most important city.

    I agree with SoothingDave.

I think that you may hear 'the major city', but it's not something that most of us feel happy with - unless there are only two cities in the area we are speaking of.
