Are both "they" and "these" correct below?
"Under the latter model, the general private law of associations governs sports federations, and these/they enjoy more freedom from state interference as a result."
I feel that these is also acceptable. We don't have to use federations after it.
Here are two examples from a book I just finished reading.
There are other kinds of obstacle to the free movement of goods, “non-tariff” barriers to trade, which are more difficult to identify. These comprise physical and technical barriers to the free flow of goods between Member States.
All three elements must be satisfied. In order to understand the scope of the Article 81(1) prohibition, each of these must be examined.
Maybe this is also a matter of British English vs. American English.
