    long=for how long?

    "We were treating people long before you came here."

    OR

    "We had been treating people long before you came here."

    Does ''long" take the past progressive or past perfect proggressive? We use the past perfect progressive to say how long something had been happening up to a moment in the past.

    Either. The use of one or the other might be thought to imply something about their attitude to the newcomer, but I doubt if everyone's intuitions about this are the same. Personally, I think I'd be more likely to use the past perfect progressive in reported speech:

    'We were treating people long before you came here.'
    but
    I told him that we had been treating people long before he arrived at the hospital

    But this is not to say that the past continuous is wrong; it's not - in the context of reported speech it means something different.
