    Choos the best answer

i have an English test and this question really confused me:

"The shop assistant was arrested ...........theft from the store.

    A. in response to
    B. in connection with
    C. referring to
    D. with regard to"

If you guys have to choose one of these answer, what'll you choose, and why?

    Re: Choos the best answer

Why not? C and D are obviously wrong, aren't they? (I'm guessing at what you find confusing...) A is wrong because it's 'theft', rather than 'a theft', to which a response would be possible. An arrest could also be in response to 'a series of thefts'. Eliminate the three wrong answers, and what's left has to be right!

    Re: Choos the best answer

What bothers me is that "in response to" needs an "a" or a plural noun after it, while "in connection to" needs no "the" after it.
    ???

As you put it like that, it does seem strange! In fact I don't have a strong preference for A or B, but when you said B was right I began to feel a preference! But it is true that a response has to be to a particular thing, whereas 'in connection with' can refer to a general feeling (with no particular focus). But I'm not sure about this...?-) Lets see what other teachers think.
