    Apostrophe

    Hi,

I have very difficulty using apostrophe ('). I thought of using "Everyday activity or Everyday's activity" for an hour but couldn't satisfy myself. Would you mind explaining it?

I'll be very grateful to you.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Twilit,

    (1) Teacher Fivejedjon has given you an excellent answer.

    (2) May I add my comments, for you have asked a really interesting

    question.

    (3) I think that the following three sentences can also confuse some of

    us native speakers, too:

No. 1. Every day's activities were different.

No. 2. Everyday activities are boring.

No. 3. I read a newspaper every day.

    *****

Every day's activities = a short way to say:

    The activities OF every day.

It answers the question: The activities of which day? Answer: every day.

Wednesday's activities. Which day? Answer: Wednesday.

Yesterday's activities. Which day? Answer: Yesterday.

    *****

Everyday activities = What kind of activities. Answer: everyday.

What do we do every day? We eat. We sleep. We take a shower.

These are ordinary activities. Nothing special.

(You have probably guessed that the English people "invented" this

word by putting the word "every" together with the word "day.")

    *****

I read a newspaper every day.

When you tell us what you do every day, be sure to use two words.

Even some native speakers write: I read a newspaper everyday.

    That is incorrect English.

    ***** QUIZ *****

I know that this can be very confusing. Please fill the blanks with

"every day's," "everyday," or "every day."

    (1) You should eat vegetables _____. (2) In some countries, it is always raining. It is an _______ event. (3) We visited Paris last year. _____ dinner was different and delicious. (4) _____Tom arrives late to work, so his manager is getting angry. (5) Why do we buy a newspaper every day?Because _____ newspaper has something new to read. (6) People love vacations because they want to escape their _____ routines (lives).

    Answers: (1) every day, (2) everyday. (3) Every day's, (4) Every day, (5)every day's, (6) everyday.
