    Order of words

    Dear teachers.

Which one is correct for the answer for the question?

question:Will you lend me a thousand yen?

    answer:
    1. What for?
    2. For what?

Could you tell me the defference between these two?
    Thanks.

    answer:
    1. What for? What is the reason?, What do you need it for? - this phrase is more common
    2. For what? Could also mean 'I could, but what will I get in return?', also with a special intonation
Could you tell me the deffirence between these two?
    Thanks.

BJI: My response is slightly different to engee's.

"What for?" often means "What will you spend it on?", but it can also mean "Why should I do this favour for you?".
    For example:
"Will you lend me a thousand yen?"
"What for?... you've got plenty of money of your own".

"For what?" usually means "What will you spend it on?".
"Will you lend me a thousand yen?"
"For what? Are you buying that textbook?"

    Re: Order of words

    I agree with JMurray's response.

The reading below seems to me to be rather unlikely:

"For what? Could also mean 'I could, but what will I get in return?', also with a special intonation"

Are you saying that What for? couldn't be substituted for What do you need the money for? If so, that'll be strange indeed.

Thanks. I was beginning to worry that what I find in my sources, written by native speakers of English, is wrong.
