    would in requests

    Hello dear friends,

could someone help me with the use of "would" ? What is the short answer when having a request with "would" ? For example:

Could I smoke ? Yes, you can.

Might I smoke ? Yes, you may.

    BUT:

Would you like to smoke ? "Yes, I would." or "Yes, I will."

    Thank you all.

    Re: would in requests

In asking permission, 'might I smoke?' is very diffident indeed. We are more likely to hear 'may/can I smoke?'

Actually, unless we are determined for some reason to use a modal verb, we are far more likely to use a non-modal construction such as:

Do you mind if I smoke?
Is it OK/all right if I smoke?
Is it OK/all right to smoke?
