    is or was

I read this paragraph in an article

John was involved in a car accident in June of last year and he has sued Mary for his injuries. Mary said John is responsible for the accident.

Should we use past tense in the last sentence. Mary said John was responsible for the accident?

In Mary's opinion, John is still responsible for the accident. In such a case, it's okay to use the present simple tense.
