Is there a need for any comma?

Dino apologized to Vira saying that he just missed her.

Heh heh. Very British. We don't use past perfect in this sense in AmE. The comma is optional.

    Not a teacher

I would use the past perfect there too, and I would say the sentence is much, much better with the comma.

    (American through and through.)
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
