the artist or a famous artist?

"It was the Eugeniya Gapchinska I knew very well, the Ukrainian artist."

    OR

"It was the Eugeniya Gapchinska I knew very well, a famous Ukrainian artist."

I haven't made up mind yet which sentence would fit better in my essay. Which sentence is better structured?

    I am not a teacher.

The first is correct, and it is better because the second has a clash between the definite article (the Eugeniya) and the indefinite (an artist). You could make it "the famous...."

I could have left out "the" before Eugenia and followed up with "a famous artist". But in that case I would've changed the meaning, wouldn't I?

I did not make myself clear. Sorry. I meant that the second sentence works if you make it, "It was the Eugeniya Gapchinska I knew very well, the famous Ukrainian artist."
