"I hear of him being sent to the South."
Can we use a present simple to mean a past action? I hear instead of I heard?
If the talk/gossip about this is on-going and from multiple sources, you can say "I hear of."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
