Thumbs down Was in the habit?

My father was in the habit of taking a long walk on Sundays.
What does was in the habit means?
Can we say Is in the habit?
Does was in the habit means = would always take a long walk on Sundays?

    Thanks in advance,
    Christin.

    Yes, Christin.

It's something he did every Sunday.
