    broken down

    Hi,

I am wondering whether 'broken down' can be used after the verb to be, as in 'the washing machine is broken down'. I have an intuition that break down is a verb, and that you should say 'the washing machine has broken down', and that you would use 'faulty' (or any other adjective) in such a case, but I'm not sure.
Can anybody tell me whether I'm right?
    Thnks

Ithink I would say that it has broken down if it stopped working recently, but that it is broken down if it has been out of action for some time, though in both cases I would be more likely to say that it's not working. As I would actually say, "The washing machine's broken down", if I used that expression, it is difficult to be sure.
