What is the meaning of "pew-cloth"?

Here is the whole sentence from the book:

"I thought then that the skirt would have been clinging up and against her left thigh, like a soft pew-cloth in the wind, and that the muscles of her thigh would have been clearly outlined against the cotton".

Where's this from and when/where was it written? :?:

b

It's an excerpt from Young Adam by Alexander Trocchi.

A pew cloth, in my experience, is an embroidered piece of felt or cotton fabric hung over a pew to "mark" or reserve it for certain people during a Mass or ceremony. But I'm not sure whether or not this is what Trocchi is referring to.

Yes, it's from "Young Adam".

Probably you're right. Your explanation makes sense for me. Thank you!
