    Is this phrase using present perfect?

    "But our DNA wouldn't have been much use because he was adopted as a baby."

    Yes, it is the present perfect. You used a present tense form of the auxiliary verb to have with the past participle form of the main verb to be [been]. The addition of the word would [wouldn't] makes this sentence conditional present perfect.

    I would use the label 'present perfect' only of forms using the present tense form of HAVE. In would have been, the underlined word is a bare infinitive, not the present tense. For me, and for many writers, the only two present perfect forms in the active voice are:

    1. I have been,
    2. I have been being.


    #2, the progressive (continuous) perfect form of BE, is not common, but it exists
