    Overnight sensation

    - Last night I read a magazine and I saw this sentence : "Pokemon becomes an overnight sensation". Does "overnight sensation" mean "shocking news after one night only"?

    Thank you very much

    Re: Overnight sensation

"Overnight sensation" refers to a rapidly-growing, widespread public excitement or interest. "Overnight" is not always used in its literal sense -- I've also heard it loosely refer to anything that's grown relatively quickly, within a few days.

    Great question!

It doesn't have to be 'shocking', which often conveys an idea of 'offensive', 'upsetting'.

An overnight sensation is something that has become immensely popular, and/or has come to be talked about everywhere, within a very short time.
