    Cool Little Red Riding Hood

The name of this quite popular character from the children tales has always been a mystery to me as for this "riding". What's the meaning of "riding" here? The little girl has nothing to do with riding horses or the like.

    Thank You

This good woman had a little red riding hood made for her. It suited the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood.

RI'DING-HOOD, n. A hood used by females when they ride; a kind of cloak with a hood.

    Re: Little Red Riding Hood

The hood was in fact a hooded cape, as we see in most illustrated versions of the story.
