Many of our staff are missing and lives have been lost.

    CTV - Canterbury Television

The building that housed the operations of Canterbury Television was destroyed in the earthquake of February 22, 2011. Many of our staff are missing and lives have been lost.

The thoughts and heartfelt sympathies of those who remain go out to the families and friends of our missing colleagues, and to all in Christchurch who are missing or have lost a loved one in this tragedy.

Many of our staff are missing and lives have been lost.
    Does this sentence sound good?

Would it be possible to say ... and many others have lost their lives.?

It would be better without 'others'. The bodies of some of those who are missing may be recovered; others will be presumed dead.

If you use 'others' in your sentence, it suggests that those who are missing have not lost their lives, which is, unfortunately, unlikely.

Are there any omitted words between and and lives?

No. You could, of course, choose to add some, many or some other similar word.
