    Proper use of the subjunctive

    Dear Teacher,
What is the proper way of expressing the two sentences listed below:

    1. John said that he read( reads) the newspaper every day.
    2. My dad said that he worked( had worked) for the government for 30 years.
    Thank you

    No subjunctives involved here.

John: "I read (present simple) the newspaper every day."
John said that he reads.... uttered if he still reads it
John said that he read (past simple) - this can be uttered at any time.

Dad: "I worked for the government for 30 years."
My Dad said that he worked/had worked .... Either is acceptable. I prefer the past perfect.
