    He was an imposter.

    I think betray works better here.

    He betrayed who he was. Or even He betrayed himself?
    He betrayed his ideals.

    Paris you should explain what you really want to say. "betray" could also be suitable here, but it depends on what you mean to say.

    He disguised himself.
    He concealed his identity.
    He dissembled.
